At Clarendon the OCR SAlters course is followed.
Aims of the Salter course
- Emphasis on th eways chemistry is used - and the work that chemists do.
- Broadening the appeal of chemistry by showing how it relates to people's lives.
- Emphasis on frontier areas of chemistry.
- Wider range of teaching and learning activities.
- A rigorous treatment of chemistry that will lay foundations for future studies
How is this different to othe Chemistry courses?
- Drip feeding of chemical ideas.
- Chemical ideas are introduced on a 'need to know basis'
- No need to cover large and more difficult opics in one go
- Only enough chemistry is taught to understand the storyline at a particular point.
- A topic may be visited several times through the course.
- Student s have two weeks to answer a set of externally set questions .
- Typically the question paper will consist of two scientific papers around a common theme in chemistry.
Course work
During year 12 you will carry out a piece of work which assesses five key areas of investigative work.
Open book paper
- Students have two weeks to answer a set of externally set questions.
- Typically the question paper will consist of two scientific papers around a common theme in chemistry.
Individual investigation in Year 13
- Lasts about four weeks
- Students work on a practical investigation of their own choice.
